Going local in Port Vila

Having failed to tour the main street of Port Vila on Sunday, Tuesday was our designated Port Vila Market visit. Our daily morning breakfast at Mangoes Resort was consumed, sun block duly applied and the backpack loaded up. Getting set for a walk into town with the promise of a bus ride home became our habit.

Ten minutes in, calmly ignoring buses which slowed down and tooted, we were on Kumul Highway. We had a couple of routes into town and today's was the short cut across the local cricket oval!

An ATM stop first for sufficient Vatu (80 vt for a dollar) to spend at the markets. With a cruise ship in town it was busy which added to the excitement of the bustle. There were souvenir shops galore along the street, interspersed with craft shops, eateries and other commercial enterprises. The Vila Markets are in a shed with two thirds designated for agricultural produce from the villages and the remainder for local craft and souvenir vendors. Many women come in on a Monday morning with their goods, sleep on the floor next to the stall overnight then return on Saturday.

While walking the main street, we heard a loud crash and some severe wailing up ahead. Because there was a bend in the road we were unable to see what was happening. Many people came rushing out of shops and businesses to see what the commotion was. We managed to cross over to the other side of the road to continue our walk and were able to see a smashed window of the Fung Kuei Duty Free Shop (biggest range of goods including liquor). We are still unaware of what had happened  although it sounded as if someone had fallen into or hit the window.

In the end it was quite a humid day and we were ready for a cool sweet treat (glacé) at Au Peche Mignon. The head waiter (or most probably owner) was most insistent upon which tables people should be sitting on. Even if he had asked you to sit at a certain table, he would have no hesitation in moving you to another table (which he did to us). The service was excellent and the glacé was delicious. Before hailing a bus down we grabbed a few more grocery supplies from Au Bon Marché, then took the 600vt journey back to our apartment.
